REAL Literacy
The Rigorous Explicit Academic Language for Literacy (REAL Literacy) model is an organic instructional model focusing on rigorous instruction, high-quality interaction, and grade level-content with a focus on language acquisition and how the brain learns. We the facilitators learn from participants, continued research, and classroom observations. From this we refine and polish the REAL Literacy model. Our model infuses vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing based on the target content plus the language of the content. When done with intent, fidelity, and consistency, REAL Literacy helps multilingual learners and their classmates with all contents, at grade-level, and all English language development levels. With its roots in multilingual learning, we have found REAL Literacy and the accompanying strategies, philosophy, and guided thinking processes effectively support literacy in whatever language or learning situation a student finds themselves.
